Michael Joseph Jackson (Gary (Indiana), 29 de agosto de 1958 – Los Angeles, 25 de junio de 2009[1] ), conocido en el mundo artístico como Michael Jackson, fue un cantante, compositor y bailarín estadounidense de música pop, en una amplia acepción que incluye subgéneros como el rhythm & blues (soul y funk), disco y dance. Tras formar en los años sesenta, siendo aún un niño, un grupo de gran éxito en compañía de sus hermanos, The Jackson Five, en la década de los años ochenta se convierte en la superestrella de pop[2] más exitosa a nivel mundial, «el nuevo rey de la música pop», debido al extraordinario impacto de su álbum Thriller (1982), el disco más vendido de la historia de la música.[3] Michael Jackson fue conocido mundialmente como rey del pop y «king of entertainment6] con disco[7] ("Billie Jean" o "Thriller", de 1982); luego la de soul o funk con dance, o hard dance[8] ("Bad" o "Smooth criminal", de 1987); y la de soul o funk con hip hop[9] ("Remember the time" o "Jam", de 1991), esta última fusión se llama new jack swing. Pero Michael Jackson, así como muchas estrellas pop de los años 80, también incursionó en el rock a través de innovadoras canciones como [10] "Beat it" (1982),[11] "Dirty Diana" (1987),[12] "Black or white" (1991),[13] "Give in to me" (1991),[14] "D.S." (1995),[15] "Morphine" (1997)[16] y "Privacy" (2001), en las que han tocado, entre otros, destacados guitarristas de hard rock como Eddie Van Halen, Steve Stevens y Slash. Jackson fue catalogado como un genio musical y artístico, lo que demostró desde sus inicios como un niño-prodigio con un nivel interpretativo realmente extraordinario. Pero también fue un personaje polémico, con defensores y detractores, al que rodearon innumerables leyendas y rumores (muchas veces alimentados por él mismo) y que se vio envuelto en acusaciones de pederastia con dos niños,[17] que tuvieron repercusión mundial y que le mantuvieron apartado en los últimos años de la primera fila de la popularidad. Poco después de su muerte, y 16 años después de los supuestos sucesos delictivos, uno de los niños implicados declaró públicamente que el cantante era inocente, y que mintió porque su padre le obligó a hacerlo para salir de la pobreza con el dinero que, efectivamente, el artista entregó a cambio de evitar el juicio.[18] Las acusaciones con el otro niño sí habían acabado en juicio, del que Jackson fue absuelto en su día.[19] Michael Jackson fue una figura de fulgurante carrera pues alcanzó su cúspide comercial y de fama antes de cumplir los 30 años de edad. Pero en él se mezclaron (como opinó el presidente Barack Obama) el éxito y tristes circunstancias personales. Las exigencias de su profesión, su afán de perfeccionismo y superación, y el acoso de la prensa, fueron factores que unidos a su timidez y sensibilidad extremas, le causaron un estrés y demás problemas de salud que se agravaron en la década de 1990 por problemas judiciales. Toda esta problemática se sumó a los traumas que Jackson arrastraba por una infancia demasiado volcada en el trabajo, y ayudan a explicar su comportamiento extraño y huidizo, sus gustos excéntricos, sus obsesiones y su deterioro físico final. En cualquier caso, su genialidad artística es indiscutible al igual que su éxito a nivel mundial, plasmado en cientos de millones de discos vendidos.
